Models Gain Confidence: Canada and Western U.S. on course for Historic Late September Snowstorms

SEPTEMBER 25, 2019 CAP ALLON

GFS TEMP ANOMALY SEPT 28

The GFS appears to be doubling-down on the historic cold and snow forecast to wallop Canada and the Northwest U.S this weekend.

According to latest runs, we’re now just 42hrs out from the first wave of Arctic air hitting SE Canada/NW U.S., which, by the end of Fri, Sept 27, is expected to have engulfed large swathes of Canada as well as practically all of the Western U.S.

All-time monthly cold records are under-threat in central and southern Canada, as well as in the U.S. states of Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Wyoming, N. & S. Dakota, Nebraska and even Kansas.

Temperature departures are set to be a staggering 20+C below normal in some spots:

The Arctic air will deliver a potent weather front, too.
Heavy and persistent snow, even blizzard conditions, are expected in the higher elevations of Montana, in particular. More than 60 inches (5 ft) could accumulate here, making for potentially all-time record breaking September snow totals.

The Weather Network has called this, “a significant snow threat”.

KTVH went with the headline, “Record Breaking Snowstorm Likely This Weekend“, and report that, “a WINTER STORM WATCH has been issued for the Glacier region and the Rocky Mountain Front for Friday evening through Sunday.”

This could be big:

GFS TOTAL SNOW (INCHES) SEPT 25 thru SEPT 30
All this powder will add to the recent early falls of the past week, as well as the record amounts of pack that survived 2019’s summer melt season — against all the global warming odds, this years Total Snow Mass for the NH is off to a colossal head start:

Many all-time cold records will fall this weekend, and I look forward to reporting on them — I’ll likely be one of the few that do.
