268 EXHALATIONS DETECTED AT MEXICO’S POPOCATÉPETL VOLCANO IN JUST 24 HOURS — THE LARGEST OF WHICH SENDS ASH 37,000 FEET (11.3 KM) A.S.L.

Multiple strong eruptions have taken place at Mexico’s Popocatépetl volcano over the past 24 hours, continuing the stratovolcano’s powerful uptick over the past 12-or-so months.

According to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington, the largest eruption fired a thick column of ash to an estimated 37,000 feet (11.3 km) above sea level, and comfortably into the stratosphere.

Particulates ejected to altitudes above 32,800 feet (10 km) have a direct cooling effect on the planet.

Within a 24 hour window, the Popocatépetl volcano monitoring network detected 268 exhalations, 90 minutes of tremors, and 3 volcano-tectonic earthquakes.

Light ashfall was reported in the State of Mexico; Ozumba; Puebla; San Nicolás de los Ranchos; Chiautzingo; San Matías Tlalpaneca, and Teotlalzingo.

CENAPRED has urged residents and tourists not to approach the volcano, especially the crater, due to the danger of falling ballistic fragments.




Popocatépetl, whose name means Smoking Mountain in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, sprang back to life in 1994 (solar minimum of cycle 22) after half a century of quiescence.

Over the past few months, violent activity at the volcano has increased tenfold, correlating neatly with the sharp drop-off in solar activity (see ‘UPTICK’ below).

Seismic and Volcanic activity has been correlated to changes in our sun.

The recent global uptick in earthquakes and volcanic eruptions is likely attributed to the drop-off in solar activity; coronal holes; a waning magnetosphere, and the influx of Cosmic Rays penetrating silica-rich magma.
