Based on the northwestern coast of the Yamal Peninsula in Russia, this Atlantic walrus colony is the biggest known in the world, said to be home to more than 3,000 of the species

The coast is a place of refuge for them to get together, hang out, and make baby walruses. Walrus hangouts are usually found on drifting sea ice or on Arctic islands, but because of warmer climates, sea ice is shrinking. Oil and gas exploration and Arctic shipping is also threatening walruses’ natural habitats and consequently their chances of surviving.
