RECORD SPRING COLD SWEEPS BRAZIL + A CONTINENT-WIDE POLAR BLAST ON COURSE TO HIT SOUTH AMERICA

Record breaking low temperatures swept parts of Brazil Thursday, November 5, as latest weather models suggest an unseasonable mid-spring chill threatens to engulf the South American continent next weekend.

The Serra Catarinense, located near the city of Urupema, woke to an unprecedented November low of -3.1C (26.4F) on Thursday: “a record of cold,” reports saojoaquimonline.com.br.



In addition, a hard frost has been recorded in many cities in Santa Catarina, from the west to the Serra Catarinense. In São Joaquim, located in the Caminhos da Neve Valley, a thick layer of ground frost covered much of the valley, leaving the landscape looking as it would during the depths of winter.

As a result, farmers were forced to take action.

Frost fans were switched on to protect orchards from the unprecedented cold — these work by utilizing warmer/drier air from the ‘inversion’ layer to create air movement at the fruiting/flowering height, preventing damage to flowers, soft tissue and fruit.

As a second line of defense, apple and grape growers in São Joaquim also lit frost fires in their orchards to stave off the cold:

However, in many places, like Vale da Invernadinha, producers weren’t so lucky. According to reports, the frost hit hard and fast in these parts, leaving farmers very little time to prepare. The small and delicate spring buds/fruits that were blossoming have been destroyed — in some regions this has signaled a complete loss of the harvest.

Looking ahead, the model’s suggest the Antarctic is preparing to whip-up another unseasonable blast of polar cold. This one will engulf much of South America, providing further headaches for the continents farmers.

Beginning in Argentina next weekend, the cold will ride anomalously-far north over the next few days, and is forecast to have gradually engulfed the majority of the continent by Nov 17, 18 and 19:

In addition to out of season chill, heavy spring snow will blanket some of the higher elevations, including those of Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru.
