THUNDERSNOW RATTLES THE UK AS THE MERCURY PLUNGES TO -9.6C (14.7F)

Police Scotland has had to reassure residents in Edinburgh after hundreds of reports of ‘explosions’ and ‘sonic booms’ clogged their switchboards.

Two “extraordinarily loud” claps of thunder were heard over the Scottish capital just before 05:00, and authorities were quick to reassure people that the strange noises were due to a phenomenon called thundersnow following a number of concerned residents saying it “sounded like bombs going off.”

Thundersnow, although rare in these parts, is simply the addition of thunder and lightning to a heavy snowstorm.

Friday morning’s heavy snow was accompanied by bone-chilling cold — temperatures plummeted to -9.6C (14.7F) in Altnaharra, the Highlands in the wee hours, an exceptionally low reading for early-December.

The extreme wintry weather has also caused disruption across many areas, including the closure of the Queensferry Crossing. In addition, more than a dozen schools have been closed in the Highlands and Moray, including Gore Glen Primary School:
