'Warning': Mushrooms sold at Food Basics, Sobeys, FreshCo and other grocery stores across Canada recalled over possible Listeria contamination

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health Canada are warning shoppers about a major recall involving a certain mushroom product sold at well-known grocery stores.

Goldenway International Trade Co., Ltd. is recalling Golden Mushroom brand Enoki Mushroom from the marketplace due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, the CFIA said in its "Food Recall Warning."

"Consumers should not consume the recalled product," the warning states. "If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor."

Check to see if you have the recalled product in your home, the Agency said. "Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased," the CFIA said.

Metro spokesperson Stephanie Bonk confirmed the product has been recalled from Food Basics stores.

Sobeys spokesperson Karen White-Boswell said the recalled mushrooms were sold at Safeway, Sobeys, FreshCo and Thrifty Foods stores but only in western Canada.

"Food safety is our number one priority at Sobeys. We are following the guidance issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regarding investigations and recalls," she said in an email. "These products were identified to be sold in our Western banners and have been removed from impacted stores’ shelves. Customers are being advised to destroy any of the products impacted by the recall and bring a receipt or product label back to the store where it was purchased for a full refund."

Spokespeople from Longo's and Loblaw say their stores don't carry the product.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick, the CFIA said, adding symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. "Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk," the CFIA said. "Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die."

This recall was triggered by CFIA test results. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated "Food Recall Warnings," it said.
