Semeru Volcano Erupts Again: Dangerous Block-and-Ash Flow Captured on Video

On February 5, 2023, a block-and-ash flow descended from a volcano at 12:42 local time. The flow created a dense ash plume that rose to 16,800 ft (5.1 km) in altitude as it descended the slope.

Mount Semeru, also known as Semeru Volcano, is an active stratovolcano located in East Java, Indonesia. It is the highest mountain in Java and one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. Semeru has been continuously erupting since 1967, producing explosive eruptions and dangerous pyroclastic flows. The volcano is located in a densely populated area, and its eruptions have caused damage to nearby communities and disrupted air traffic. The local authorities and the Indonesian government have implemented evacuation plans and risk reduction measures to protect the nearby residents. Despite the dangers posed by Semeru, it is also a popular destination for hikers and tourists due to its scenic beauty and unique geological features.
